Palm Beach is a city in Palm Beach County in the US state of Florida with 8348 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The city is located about 105 kilometers north of Miami . The neighboring cities of West Palm Beach and Lake Worth are separated from Palm Beach by the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway .

history

Standard Oil Company co-founder and railroad tycoon Henry Morrison Flagler is often cited as the founding father of Palm Beach. As a man with vision and determination, Flagler saw a profitable opportunity to develop the east coast of Florida for tourism. After spending some time here, he was fascinated by the mild climate of the peninsula. This gave him the idea that well-run hotels and a modern transport system could attract many winter vacationers from all over the continent. Flagler gradually expanded its Florida East Coast Railway southward and built associated railroad hotels . In 1893 Flagler acquired a property called " Palm Beach " (so named because of the many palm trees that grew along the coast here). The terrain was on the Atlantic Ocean and covered almost 57 hectares (140 acres ). In 1894 Flagler opened Palm Beach's first hotel complex, " The Royal Poinciana " on Lake Worth. It was south of Daytona Beach and was the first and only hotel with a lake view at the time.

Two years later, in 1896, Flagler built a harbor here. A pier about 300 meters in length was built, which was supposed to give steamships the opportunity to dock here when commuting between Nassau , Havana , and Key West . At the same time, the Palm Beach Volunteer Fire Department was formed. Its members were referred to as " Flagler Alerts ". A 9-hole course with clubhouse " The Poinciana Golf Clubhouse " was created for the golfing guests

By 1900 Palm Beach was known as a winter vacation spot for the super-rich. The "The Royal Poinciana" facility was doubled in size. Flagler laid a track of his railway line up to the hotel entrance.

Between 1920 and 1927, Palm Beach's population quadrupled. New schools were built, but also agricultural properties, sugar cane plantations, hotels, theaters and other service providers. The church grew inexorably.

Between 1926 and 1928, severe hurricanes wreaked havoc on Palm Beach. Then there was the severe real estate crisis in Florida, which began about three years before the stock market crash of October 24, 1929. Land prices fell to about half their value.

During the Second World War, more and more US military personnel were stationed along the Florida coast, on the one hand to keep an eye out for enemy ships and submarines, on the other hand there were many hospitals and rest homes. During the 1950s, more and more war veterans moved to Florida. A new era began for Florida and also for the still young city of Palm Beach. Today it is still considered a meeting point for the super-rich.
