Boynton Beach is a city in Palm Beach County in the US state of Florida with 68,217 inhabitants (as of 2010). The urban area has a size of 42.1 km², of which 1 km² is water.

geography

Boynton Beach is located in southeast Florida on the Atlantic , about 70 km north of Hialeah .

The following cities are in the immediate vicinity, within a radius of 10 km: Ocean Ridge , Briny Breezes , Golf , Gulf Stream , Hypoluxo , Manalapan , Lantana and Dunes Road .

climate

The climate is mild and warm, with a light sea wind, which, however, rarely occurs. Statistically, it rains an average of 45% of the days in the summer months, even if only briefly, but heavily. The highest temperatures are in May to October, with up to 33 ° C. The coldest months from December to February with an average of only 12 ° C. Snowfall is almost unknown in the region.

history

Boynton Beach was named after the Michigan native , former Civil War Major, Nathan S. Boynton . He was so fascinated by the area that is now the city that in 1895, a year after visiting the area for the first time, he and a group of colonists built the Boynton Beach Hotel . Until the end of the Second World War, Boynton Beach was little known. Only after soldiers settled down after the war to start a family did things improve.

The city's location, just 50 miles from Miami , as well as the blooming nature and coastline, steadily attracted people.

Around 1958, Boynton Beach had a population of around 5,000. Since then the population has increased significantly. This is unlikely to change in the future either, as Boynton Beach is located in one of the fastest growing areas in the United States.

Religions

In Boynton Beach there are currently 59 different churches from 23 different denominations, of which the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 7 churches. There are also 18 churches that do not belong to any denomination (as of 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 68,217 inhabitants were distributed over 36,289 households. The population density was 1659.8 inh / km². 62.4% of the population identified themselves as whites , 30.3% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 2.2% as Asian Americans . 2.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.2% to several ethnic groups. 12.8% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 25.1% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 35.5% of all households. 56.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.31 people and the average family size was 3.00 people.

21.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 42 years. 47.2% of the population were male and 52.8% were female.

The median annual income was $ 45,156, with 15.1% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 80.09% of the population, 7.51 spoke Haitian , 7.30% spoke Spanish and 5.10% had another mother tongue.

Attractions

The Boynton School , Boynton Woman's Club, and the Lofthus shipwreck are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Boynton Beach is on Interstate 95, which runs north-south . Other roads in the city are US Highway 1 and Florida State Roads A1A and 804 .

The city also has a stop on the Tri-Rail- operated railway line from Mangonia Park to Miami Airport .

The city can be reached internationally by air at the following airports: Palm Beach International Airport near West Palm Beach , about 32 km away, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport near Fort Lauderdale , about 34 km away, and Miami International Airport near Miami , about 68 km away. Boca Raton Airport , about 2 km away, is also ideal for domestic air traffic .

economy

The main branches of employment are: Education, health and social affairs: (18.2%), trade / retail: (14.6%), art, entertainment, food, restaurants: (10.9%), future technology, management, administration: (11.7%).

Parks and sports facilities

There is a wide range of different city parks as well as several sporting facilities, as well as playgrounds and opportunities for camping and barbecuing. There are various beach and water sports on the beach.

The crime rate in 2010 was 430 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were four murders, six rapes, 143 robberies, 432 assaults, 727 break-ins, 2361 thefts, 107 car thefts and five arson attacks.
