Jupiter is a city in Palm Beach County in the US state of Florida with 65,524 inhabitants (as of 2018).

geography

The city is located in the north of the county at the confluence of the Loxahatchee River in the Atlantic Ocean , about 25 km north of West Palm Beach .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 55,156 inhabitants were distributed over 29,825 households. The population density was 1064.8 inh / km². 90.6% of the population identified themselves as whites , 1.5% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 2.0% as Asian Americans . 3.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.7% to several ethnic groups. 12.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 26.1% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 32.5% of all households. 62.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.29 people and the average family size was 2.80 people.

21.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 45 years. 49.7% of the population were male and 50.3% were female.

The median annual income was $ 66,370, with 8.5% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 88.47% of the population, 7.17% spoke Spanish and 4.36% had another mother tongue.

The Jupiter Inlet Historic and Archeological Site and Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

In the far west, Interstate 95 and Florida's Turnpike run right next to each other in a north-south direction through the urban area. US Highway 1 and Florida State Roads A1A , 5 , 706 and 811 run through the city itself .

The Florida East Coast Railway , which is used for freight transport, runs through Jupiter . Passenger traffic on the route ceased in 1968.

The nearest international airport is Palm Beach Airport at West Palm Beach, 30 km south . The William P. Gwinn Airport ( UTX ) of the United Technologies Corporation ( 26 ° 54 '23.8 "  N , 80 ° 19' 8.8"  W ) is located in the west of the city.

Sports

The Jupiter Hammerheads baseball team is based in Jupiter.

The crime rate in 2010 was 174 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There were two murders, ten rapes, 37 robberies, 73 assaults, 203 break-ins, 818 thefts, 47 car thefts and one arson.
