Mar-a-Lago [ mɑɹ.ə.lɑ.goʊ ] is a stately home in Palm Beach in the US state of Florida . It was designed by the architect Joseph Urban and completed in 1927. Today it belongs to the US President Donald Trump as a private person. The usable area of the building is 10,000 m², it is located on an approx. 35,000 m² property directly by the sea. The building has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the US Department of the Interior . Since taking office as President in January 2017, the Trump estate has served as one of his residences.

history

Living room (1967)

The 118-room Spanish-style luxury property was built from 1924 to 1927 as a summer residence for Marjorie Merriweather Post , owner of the General Foods group and one of the richest women of the time. In 1973 she bequeathed it to the state, which quickly became too expensive to maintain. The property has been a National Historic Landmark since December 23, 1980 . Because of the emissions from the nearby Palm Beach airport , the historic building fabric is classified as endangered.

In 1985, Donald Trump, who was then a building contractor in New York , bought the property for five million US dollars - well below the market value : he had bought the beach properties in the row in front of the property through straw men and was pushing the price for the historic property by threatening to block Mar-a-Lagos sea views. Trump had the building extensively renovated, and in 1995 he made part of the site his private club. Trump had a ballroom built in which the " International Red Cross Ball" took place almost every year from 2005 to 2017 . In August 2017, the Red Cross announced that the ball would no longer be held in Mar-a-Lago in the future.

Trump has been US President since January 2017 and has been staying at Mar-a-Lago frequently since then; especially in winter. The property is one of the four official presidential residences adjacent to the White House , Trump Tower in New York, and Trump's Golf Club in New Jersey . He also refers to the property as the Winter White House or Southern White House .

In early 2017, the director of the private club confirmed the increase in the admission fee from $ 100,000 to $ 200,000. Admission to the nearby Mar-a-Lago Golf Club costs a million dollars.

Trump used the site at the beginning of his presidency as the place of the state visit of the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe . In April 2017, Trump received the Chinese President Xi Jinping there and commanded the air strike on the asch-Schaʿirat military airfield in Syria from a room set up as a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility . On April 17 and 18, 2018, Abe was again Trump's state guest in Mar-a-Lago.

In October 2019, Trump relocated his primary residence from New York to Mar-a-Lago, breaking an agreement made in 1993 with the City of Palm Beach to use the property.
