John Udall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Udall (* around 1560 ; † 1592 ) was an English puritan and writer .

Life

Udall became a priest and soon faced difficulties from the hierarchy of the Church of England because of his criticism of the episcopal system . In 1588 he anonymously published a pamphlet that was widely read and made him suspect of being one of the authors of the "Marprelate Tracts" (1588-89). The second pamphlet, "A Demonstration of the Truth of that Discipline which Christ Hath Prescribed for the Government of His Church," was considered a political offense because it attacked an institution which was founded by royal orders. Udall was sentenced to death; after the intercession of Sir Walter Raleigh he was pardoned, but he died in prison. Udall also published some of his speeches as well as a Hebrew grammar and dictionary.
