The Alamodome is a multi-purpose indoor arena in the US city ​​of San Antonio , Texas . The building was opened in 1993 and is mainly used as a football and basketball stadium, as well as an exhibition hall. The audience capacity for football games is 65,000, but can be expanded to 72,000.

history

The Alamodome was built to provide a larger venue for the owners of the San Antonio Spurs ( NBA ). With the construction of a multifunctional hall, the aim was also to attract more conventions and a professional football team. After ten years, however, the Spurs became dissatisfied with the stadium and convinced Bexar County to build them a new arena. You are now playing there at the AT&T Center .

The Alamodome is currently used by the UTSA Roadrunners of the University of Texas at San Antonio , the UTSA Roadrunners, as the home of their football team. The first NCAA championship game took place on September 3, 2011.

Events

The Alamodome is the venue for the annual Alamo Bowl , which is usually played between the fourth-choice teams of the Big Ten Conference and the Big 12 Conference . The previous record attendance for a sporting event at the stadium was achieved in 2007 when the game between Texas A&M and Penn State drew 66,166 spectators. In June 2013, George Strait gave a concert in front of 73,086 people at the Alamodome. This was the highest number of visitors to the stadium to date.

In 1998, 2004 and 2008 the Final Four of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship took place at the Alamodome. In 2002 and 2010, the Final Four of the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship was held at the Alamodome.

There were also some concerts in the Alamodome. Paul McCartney gave the first concert on May 29, 1993. On November 23, 1997 U2 gave a concert here as part of their Popmart Tour . Britney Spears performed on her Oops! ... I Did It Again World Tour on July 20, 2000 and again on July 15, 2002 on her Dream Within a Dream Tour .

The 30th WWE Royal Rumble took place on January 29, 2017 in front of 52,020 spectators at the Alamodome.

The Alamodome was one of the venues for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 .
