Popmart Tour
The PopMart Tour of U2 took on April 25, 1997 ( Las Vegas ) to 21 March 1998 ( Johannesburg ). It was the tour for the album Pop , released in March 1997 .
All concerts took place outdoors. For the first time U2 gave concerts in Israel, South America, Bosnia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Greece and Africa. The concert on December 3rd in Mexico City was recorded and marketed as VHS ( Popmart Live From Mexico City ), in September 2007 the concert was also released on DVD , whereby the picture and the sound were further improved. The limited live album (Hasta La Vista Baby!) Also comes from this concert.
The stage
The stage of the Popmart Tour was 60 meters wide, 25 meters high and 15 meters deep. With a cocktail stick at the right end of the stage, on which an olive was impaled, the stage reached a height of 40 meters. Also at the right end was a chrome-plated lemon 12 meters high. In the background of the stage was a 700 square meter screen. Until 2007 it was the largest LED screen ever built for a concert. Above the band was an arch on which 60 red boxes (Clair Brothers S4) were hung in a semicircle. To the right of the band members a catwalk in the shape of a half U protruded into the audience; At the end of the catwalk there was a so-called B-stage (front stage) on which U2 played some songs such as Discothéque and With or Without You . 75 trucks and a Boeing 747 were required to transport the stage . As the construction and dismantling of the stage required a lot of time, three Popmart stages were used at the same time. U2 always appear on the catwalk, while the intro Pop Muzik takes place on the PA and the screen says POP in large letters, with various caricatures being played in the letter O.
