The Sydney Football Stadium was a rugby - and football stadium in the suburb of Moore Park to the Australian city Sydney . It was closed at the beginning of October 2018 and demolished in 2019 for a new building.
history
The then Sydney Football Stadium was built in 1988 on the site of the former Sydney Sports Ground as the first " rectangular stadium" in Sydney. Initially it was mainly used as a venue for rugby league matches, but later it was also used for rugby union and football . It was built to complement the nearby Sydney Cricket Ground , as the oval pitch there was less suitable for sports such as football or rugby.
When the stadium opened, it had 41,159 seats; it currently has 45,500 seats, including 44,000 seats. The audience record is 43,967, achieved in 1993 in the qualifying match for the 1994 World Cup between Australia and Argentina .
In 2002 a sponsorship deal was signed with Aussie Home Loans and the facility was renamed from Sydney Football Stadium to Aussie Stadium . After the contract expired in 2007, the venue was again called Sydney Football Stadium. At the end of February 2012, it was given a new name by the Allianz Group and was renamed Allianz Stadium until it was closed .
The more than 30 year old Allianz Stadium is to be replaced by a new building. Because of the high cost of modernization, the state of New South Wales decided on a new stadium. The architecture firm Bates Smart planned the construction above the Sydney Central Station , the main train station of the city, in the center of Sydney. This should solve the traffic problems at the old stadium. In October 2018, the city decided to build a new building at the old location at Moore Park. The new stadium is to have a rectangular shape and offer 40,000 to 45,000 covered seats with improved visual axes. Furthermore, the range of food and drinks is to be improved and the connection to local public transport expanded. The work should start in late 2018 and continue until early 2022. Construction costs should be around AUD 729 million (around € 455 million ).
