The Sydney Sports Ground was a stadium in Sydney , Australia . The stadium consisted of two large grandstands and a hill used as a grandstand and had a capacity of more than 35,000 spectators. It was demolished in 1986 to make way for the new Sydney Football Stadium to be built on the same site , which opened in 1988.

Mainly the Sports Ground was used as the venue for the home games of the rugby league team Eastern Suburbs , founded in 1908 . There were also football matches in the stadium and various boxing matches between 1930 and 1960 . The Australian boxers Jack Carroll , Ron Richards and Jimmy Carruthers fought here . For some time the Sports Ground was also used for speedway races , with a total of 12 drivers dying in accidents on the track between 1937 and 1955.

In 1938 the British Empire Games were held at the Sydney Sports Ground . In 1981 the stadium served as the venue for several games of the Junior World Cup .
