Overview of the facilities in Penrith

The Penrith Whitewater Stadium is an artificial white water facility , located in Penrith , about an hour's drive west of Sydney , Australia . The stadium was built for the canoe slalom competitions of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . The whitewater facility is part of the Penrith Lake Scheme near Cranebrook , New South Wales , and borders the Sydney International Regatta Center. Both rainwater and groundwater serve as a water source for the facility and the adjacent lakes .

The facility itself was built in the shape of a "U", has a length of 320 meters and a height difference between start and finish of 5 meters. The concrete canal is 0.8 to 1.2 meters deep and 8 to 12 meters wide. The boats can be comfortably transported using a conveyor belt between the finish and start pool. The athlete does not have to leave his raft or canoe .

The system has six 300 kW propeller pumps, of which only five are normally operated. Each pump has a delivery rate of 2.8 m 3 / s, which means that around 14 m 3 of water per second gets into the starting basin.

Both fixed and adjustable obstacles are used in the channel to create artificial water currents. When it opened, the facility was considered the most modern in the world and was the first Olympic canoe slalom course in which the water flow was generated with electric pumps.

The total cost to build the facility was A $ 6 million. Of these, 1.5 million contributed AUD the community Penrith , 1.5 million AUD of the International Canoe Federation (including 300,000 AUD by Australian Canoe Federation) and 3 million AUD of the state New South Wales . The construction costs originally estimated at AUD 12 million meant that the International Olympic Committee was considering removing canoe slalom from the program of the Olympic Games , which was only achieved through the assumption of construction costs by the canoe associations (which is unusual for Olympic construction projects), Place and region could be prevented.

The facility has a café and, in addition to competitions, is also used as a leisure facility for the public all year round. Here is both rafting and lessons in canoeing offered and whitewater safety training.
