The Sydney Olympic Park is a 640 hectare site in Homebush Bay , a suburb of Sydney . The area with its sports facilities formed the geographical center of the 2000 Summer Olympics and the 2000 Summer Paralympics that followed .

history

The area of today's Sydney Olympic Park was inhabited by Aborigines before the settlement of Australia by the British . In 1807 it was added to Newington under the ownership of John Blaxland . In the second half of the 19th century, the government claimed part of the area for a home that housed old women. The rest of the area remained a river and swamp landscape . In the period that followed, parts of the country were used industrially and militarily , which led to the contamination of the soil.

In the 1980s, the idea of a technology park to be created in this area was pursued. However, only the high-tech companies AWA Microelectronics , BASF , Philips and Sanyo settled here . The aspired technology center was realized in Eveleigh , another suburb of Sydney.

When Sydney was attempting to apply for the 2000 Summer Olympics at the beginning of the 1990s and was then carried out, another use for the area came up. It was to form the heart of the Games with the Olympic Stadium and other sports facilities. In this context, infrastructure and sports infrastructure were improved and newly created.

After the Olympic Games and the Paralympics, the park is now used as a local recreation area and venue for larger sporting and cultural events. In addition, companies such as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia with office buildings also settled here.

management

The development of the area of today's Sydney Olympic Park can also be traced on the basis of the responsible management. Until 1995 it was under the jurisdiction of the Homebush Bay Development Corporation . Between 1995 and 2001 the park was under the direction of the Olympic Co-Ordination Authority . During this time the preparations for and the implementation of the Olympic Games and Paralympics of the year 2000 took place. Since then the Sydney Olympic Park Authority has directed the park .
