The Brisbane Cricket Ground , commonly referred to as The Gabba due to its location in the suburb of Woolloongabba , is a stadium in Brisbane, Australia . It is mainly used for sporting events such as cricket and Australian football .

history

The origins of the stadium go back to 1895 when the place was reserved for cricket matches. Between 1993 and 2005 it was completely renovated and the current number of seats of 42,000 was achieved.

Cricket

The first game of cricket took place in 1896, the first test in 1931. It was also the stadium where the first test tie was played in December 1960 . At the Cricket World Cup in 1992 and 2015 , three preliminary round matches were held here.

Australian football

The stadium was the home of the Brisbane Bears in the Australian Football League between 1993 and 1996 . When the club was merged into the Brisbane Lions , the latter played its home games in this stadium from then on.

Other usage

During the Olympic Games 2000 , group football matches were played in the stadium . It is also occasionally used for rugby union test matches for the Australian national team .
