The Stadio Tommaso Fattori is a football stadium in the Italian city of L'Aquila , capital of the Abruzzo region . The facility, which is named after the former rugby player and coach Tommaso Fattori , has 9200 seats. Until 2016, the sports arena was the home ground of the football club L'Aquila Calcio . It is now used for games by the local rugby team.

history

The stadium was designed in 1929 by the Milanese architect Paolo Vietti-Violi . However, the construction work was led by Mario Gioia and the engineer Gaetano Lisio . The stadium was built on the Piazza d'Armi , on which the games were previously held. The construction costs for the plant amounted to around six million lire .

On October 1, 1933, the sports complex was opened with the game L'Aquila Calcio against Alma Juventus Fano 1906 . The stadium was named Stadio del Littorio . This was changed in the following year based on the march on Rome in Stadio XXVIII Ottobre . After the Second World War , it was first named Stadio Comunale ( German  municipal stadium ) before it was given its current name in the 1960s.

In 1959, the stadium was selected as a venue for football matches during the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome . Because of this, some renovations have been made to the stadium. Later, the track that was between the field and the cycling track was removed. In the late 1980s, the scoreboard was erected behind the gate.

In 1999, the only rear grandstand was divided into a home and a guest sector. The proximity of the two sectors caused problems, so the municipality built a new entrance for guest fans on Viale Croce Rossa . In order to provide a better view of the field, the old iron walls between the stands and the field were removed and replaced with Plexiglas panes.

2003 began with the expansion of the home curve, which was never completed due to financial problems of the construction company.

Although the L'Aquila earthquake in 2009 did not damage the Stadio Tommaso Fattori, some areas were declared inaccessible and the total capacity was temporarily reduced to 5,000 seats. From 2016, with the opening of the Stadio Gran Sasso d'Italia-Italo Acconcia , L'Aquila Calcio moved out of the Stadio Tommaso Fattori.

Soccer games

Series A

Despite the fact that L'Aquila Calcio never played in Serie A , the Stadio Tommaso Fattori has already played league games. Since SSC Napoli was not allowed to play their top game against AC Milan in Napoli, the game took place in L'Aquila on January 18, 1948. Three years later, AS Roma were also not allowed to play a home game in their own stadium. So the club evaded against the CFC Genoa also to L'Aquila.

Attendance record

In the 1980s, a friendly match between AS Roma and US Catanzaro in 1929 set the stadium's attendance record. A total of 18,084 spectators watched the game in the stands and on the cycling track around the field.
