The PalaLottomatica is a multi-purpose hall in the south of the Italian capital Rome . It was built from 1958 to 1960 for the 1960 Summer Olympics as Palazzo dello Sport according to plans by Marcello Piacentini (architect) and Pier Luigi Nervi (civil engineer) and was the venue for the boxing and basketball competitions . The hall offers a maximum of 11,200 seats, and 10,500 seats are available for basketball games. It gets its current name from the lottery company Lottomatica , which financed the renovation from 1999 to 2003.

history

On June 16, 1955, Rome prevailed against six competitors for the 1960 Summer Olympics ; the project started a year later. The architect Marcello Piacentini and the civil engineer Pier Luigi Nervi are responsible for the round domed building in the EUR district , which was built until 1960 . The dome has a diameter of 100 meters. There is also a restaurant with 300 seats and a roof terrace with a panoramic view and an area of ​​2,700 m². During the Summer Olympics, the hall was the venue for basketball and boxing competitions.

From 1983 to 2011 the basketball club Virtus Roma ( Lega Basket Serie A ) almost consistently welcomed their opponents to their home games in the Palazzo dello Sport, only interrupted by the renovation of the building; since 2011 only the playoffs and Eurolega games of the club have taken place here. In addition to the Virtus Roma games, the arena was also used. a. as the venue and final location of the 1991 European basketball championship . Six years later, the Final Four tournament in the 1997 European Basketball Cup took place in the Roman multi-purpose hall. The final four tournament of the men's volleyball Champions League took place in 2006. During the 2006 NBA Europe Live Tour , Virtus Roma played against the Phoenix Suns on October 6, losing to the NBA team 93-100. The following year, on October 6, 2007, the Toronto Raptors lost to the Boston Celtics with 85:89 in the hall in Rome. A day later Virtus Roma lost in front of a home crowd against the Toronto Raptors with 87:93. The finals of the men's volleyball world championship in 1978 and 2010 were also played in the hall. In 2014 PalaLottomatica is one of the venues for the women's volleyball world championship .

Because of its capacity and good acoustics , the hall is also a venue for concerts. In 1971 z. B.
