The VfB Friedrichshafen managed in Group B against the two favorites VC Dynamo Moscow and Tours VB only a victory, but reached third place play-off round. Stelian Moculescu's team failed there with a clear 3-0 away defeat at the top Russian club Lokomotive Belgorod , but at least beat the later semi-finalists 3-2 at home.
The evivo Düren team, which appeared to be a clear outsider, exceeded their own expectations when they first participated in the Champions League. In the first game of Group C against the clear favorite Sisley Treviso, Bernd Werscheck's team was on the verge of a sensation with a 2-0 set lead and two match points. Then they beat Vienna at home and won against Noliko Maaseik , but also a home win at the end against Treviso could not prevent the narrow end after the preliminary round (due to the poor ball point quotient).
Hypo Tirol could not prevail in Group A against the later finalists Thessaloniki and the Benelux teams from Roeselare and Rotterdam and was eliminated in fourth place after the preliminary round.
The Aon hotVolleys Vienna ended up in group C u. a. with a home win against a weakened Treviso team a place in front of the Düren team. Since the eventual overall winner from Italy was selected to host the Final Four tournament after the preliminary round, the Austrians reached the play-off round in fourth place in the group. There they had no chance against Thessaloniki.
Group stage
At the draw on August 12, 2005, the qualified teams were divided into four groups of five participants each. The top three teams in each group (and Vienna in fourth) reached the next round.
Since Treviso was automatically qualified as host, three teams were still able to qualify for the Final Four. These teams were determined in two play-off rounds with a return leg.
