While twelve teams were set for this main round, a further eight from a previous warm-up round from a pool of 24 teams had to qualify. After the field of participants was completed and the clubs were drawn into their groups. Each team played at home and away against each of the three opponents. There were three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, two for a 3-2 win and one point for a 3-2 defeat. The first two in a group and three thirds qualified for the playoffs.
