Iraklis Thessaloniki VC ( Greek Ηρακλής Θεσσαλονίκη ΤΑΠ ) is the volleyball department of the renowned Greek sports club Iraklis Thessaloniki . The team plays in the top division of Greece.

history

The Iraklis volleyball team was founded in 1921. The department is one of the most successful in the association. The club played first class until 1982. With immediate resurgence, however, the abstinence from the first division was short-lived.

The first success was celebrated in 2000 by winning the league cup introduced in 1980. As a runner-up they met the reigning champion Olympiacos Piraeus in the final, which they defeated in 3-0 sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-21). The same pairing was also the final in the following year, but it was not possible to defend the title. A year later, they made it to the final. This time they faced local rivals Aris , who could be beaten in 3: 1 sets (25-20, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19). The second cup win was not the highlight of the season. Iraklis also managed to secure the Greek championship for the first time in the club's history . The whole thing was crowned by third place in the Champions League . However, due to the defeat in the semifinals against Lube Macerata at the Final Four in Opole Poland , they missed the chance to meet league rivals Olympiacos in a purely Greek final.

The success story of the association was continued. The pairings in the final of the League Cup in 2004 and 2005 should again be Iraklis against Olympiakos. Both times they prevailed against the club from Piraeus . The same pairing was also that of the final of the 2004/05 playoffs for the championship title. Iraklis secured the double again with his second championship title. A perfect season was only prevented by the defeat in the final of the Champions League against Tours Volley-Ball, which they lost with 1: 3 sets.

They wanted to correct the flaw from the previous year in the 2005/06 season. The team reached the final of the League Cup, the playoffs for the Greek Championship and that of the Champions League. In the cup final, which was held in Amaliada that year , they beat Panathinaikos Athens and won the third cup in a row and the fifth overall. In the championship final, the opponent was also called Panathinaikos, but this time they could not be defeated. There was also a defeat in the final of the premier class. Sisley Treviso defeated the club in Rome with 3-1 sets.

But Iraklis did not lose dominance, the Greek championship and their title defense in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons went to the volleyball club from Thessaloniki . They also reached the final of the Champions League held in Prague , but lost to Trentino Volley . The successful coach Alekos Leonis, under whom all titles of the club have so far been won, left the club at that time. That left its mark on Iraklis. Several seasons without a title followed. Even if they secured the double in 2011/12 with the championship and the cup, the Iraklis VC could not prevent relegation in the following season. For the 2015/16 season he returned to the House of Lords.
