Men

The Panathinaikos men's volleyball division was founded in 1919 and is one of the oldest in Greece. Since then Panathinaikos has been one of the most successful clubs in Greece and has produced a large number of national players. The most successful phase was between 1963 and 1986, when 17 national titles were won in 23 years and Panathinaikos was able to achieve second place in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1980 . The following dry spell with only two Greek championships (1995, 1996) and a third place in the European Cup Winners' Cup could only be ended again in 2004 with the championship and fourth place in the CEV Cup .

The association owed this to its President Vlasis Stathokostopoulos, among others. The financially strong large restaurateur took over the association in the summer of 2001 and has since invested large sums to bring the association back to its old size and strength.

The club caused a stir in the summer of 2005 when the transfer market caused three bangs. In addition to the Argentinian start coach Carlos Javier Weber, the two Brazilians Marcelo Elgarten and Dante Amaral were signed, who both won the World Cup and the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with their national team . With these reinforcements Panathinaikos secured the Greek championship in 2006 and lost only two games. At the same time, they made it to the final of the Greek Cup and reached third place in the Top Teams Cup . After the season, Carlos Javier Weber resigned as coach due to personal problems and returned to his home country Argentina. In his place, the Brazilian Francisco dos Santos was signed, who was coach of the Portuguese national team at the time and immediately won the Greek Supercup with Panathinaikos for the first time in 2006 and the Greek Cup in 2007.

In 2009, the club made it into the Final4 tournament for the CEV Cup and came second in front of a home crowd in Athens. The 15,000 fans present in the final represent a European record for a volleyball game that is still valid today.

homestead

From 1959 Panathinaikos played his home games in the sports hall under the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium . This sports hall, located below the east curve (Gate 6–7) in the heart of Athens, was the first of its kind in Greece. Due to the small number of spectators (approx. 1500 spectators), the club decided in 2005 to play its home games in the "Ethniko Athlitiko Kentro Glyfadas" . The sports hall, located in the southern suburb of Glyfada, from the city center, holds 3232 spectators and is publicly owned. Until 1985, the sports hall, built in 1970, was the largest in Athens and the second largest in Greece. Since 2011 the "Panagiotis Gazgas" is Panathinaikos home. The sports hall can hold 1,200 spectators and is located in the heart of Athens in the immediate vicinity of the Panathinaiko Stadium .

anthem

Panathinaikos hymn comes from Georgios Mouzakis (born August 15, 1922 - August 27, 2005) from 1958. Georgios Ikonomidis wrote the text.

German

There isn't a team as big as you,
there is no other team that is as dynamic.
And thousands of followers, as soon as they see the shamrock,
cheer “long live Panathinaikos”
Panathinaikos, Panathinaikos,
Panathinaikos you great and glorious.
Panathinaikos, Panathinaikos,
eternal master of all sports.
You were honored by your famous stars,
who are all heroes with big hearts.
The whole of Greece is happy to have such a club that
always has the keys to victory
Panathinaikos, Panathinaikos,
Panathinaikos you great and glorious.
Panathinaikos, Panathinaikos,
eternal master of all sports.
