The 14th Men's Gymnastics European Championships in 1981 were held in Italy and took place from 23 to 24 May in the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome . The dominance of the athletes from the Soviet Union in the all- around competition with the victory of Alexander Tkachev continued on the individual devices, where they could win five titles. Bohdan Makuz successfully defended their titles in jumping and on parallel bars and Tkachev on horizontal bar. György Guczoghy from Hungary also succeeded in doing the same on the pommel horse. The West German Eberhard Gienger secured his last international title on the bar with the highest mark of the day of 9.95.
With the title on the ground, Roland Brückner achieved the triple on this device after winning the 1979 World Cup and 1980 Olympics . Before him, this was only achieved by the Yugoslav Miroslav Cerar and Zoltán Magyar from Hungary on the pommel horse and Alexander Ditjatin from the Soviet Union on the rings.
