European Gymnastics Championships 1979 (men)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 13th Men's Gymnastics European Championships in 1979 were held in the Federal Republic of Germany and took place from May 18th to 19th in Essen's Grugahalle . 3,000 spectators followed the competitions on both days. They saw the first success of a Bulgarian gymnast in the all-around competition and the dominance of the athletes from the Soviet Union on the individual devices. There they won five out of six possible apparatus titles and also made Bohdan Makuz, the most successful gymnast of these championships. Local hero Eberhard Gienger, one of the big favorites in the all-around competition, could not meet the high expectations in front of the home crowd. In the all-around competition he failed on the pommel horse and one day later he had to leave the device on his parade device on the horizontal bar at the Gienger somersault . Ultimately, he had to make peace with himself and the host with bronze on the bars .
