Qualification and schedule

At the fifth basketball tournament in Olympic history, so many teams registered for the first time that qualification was necessary. The seven best teams of the 1956 tournament were seeded. Italy was the host, Japan was the second representative for Asia, and Mexico and Puerto Rico for America.

The remaining five places for the Olympic tournament were awarded at a qualification in the Sports Palace of Bologna. This qualification took place just before the Olympic Games from August 13th to 20th. Czechoslovakia, Spain, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Poland qualified. Belgium, Canada, Israel, Germany, Greece, Republic of China, Australia, Thailand, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Suriname, Austria and Sudan did not qualify.

The sixteen teams in the Olympic tournament played against each other in four groups in the preliminary round. The first two teams in each group were promoted to the round of the top eight, the other two teams in the placement round for places 9-16.
In the second group phase, which was now beginning, the teams were sorted into the groups in such a way that no team met a team that they had already met in the preliminary round. The first two teams in this group stage now rose to the placement group 1-4 or 9-12, the other teams had to move into the placement group 5-8 or 13-16. The results of the second group phase were taken into the final group.
