Gennadi Georgijewitsch Wolnow ( Russian Генна́дий Гео́ргиевич Вольно́в ; English transcription Gennadi Georgiyevich Volnov ; born November 28, 1939 in Moscow , Soviet Union ; † July 15, 2008 in Konakowo ) was a Soviet basketball player . As a player, Wolnow became Olympic, world and European champions with the national basketball team of the USSR . He was one of the most successful basketball players of his time.
Career in the club
The career of Gennady Wolnow began in 1957 in the highest Soviet league with Spartak Moscow . After just one year, he was appointed to CSKA Moscow . He spent thirteen successful years at CSKA. With ZSKA he won the European Cup three times . There were also eight Soviet championships. After the official end of his career, he played for one year each with Burewestnik and Dynamo Moscow. His jersey with the number 13 hangs under the roof of the ZSKA universal sports hall , where ZSKA plays its home games.
Career in the national team
The first major tournament in the national team for Wolnow was the 1959 European Championship in Turkey, which he won with the Soviet Union team. In addition to this European title, there were five more titles in a row. He was elected to the MVP of the tournament at the EM 1965 and EM 1969 . He was equally successful with the Soviet Union at the World Championships. While only third place was achieved in the final result at the 1963 World Cup , Wolnow managed to win the title with the USSR at the next World Cup in 1967 . At this tournament he was again elected MVP. Gennadi Wolnow was a participant in a total of four Olympic tournaments. After the Olympic Games in Rome and Tokyo , which were successful with silver medals and a bronze medal in Mexico , Wolnow's career in the national team seemed to be coming to an end. For the 1970 World Cup , he was removed from the squad at short notice. Somewhat surprisingly, he was selected for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Here he was one of the starting five in eight out of nine games. The victory in the final against the USA was his greatest sporting success.

In 1970 Wolnow began teaching at the Military Academy for Radiological, Chemical and Biological Weapons in Kostroma . There he was appointed lecturer and later professor.
