The 11th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1959 ) was held from 21 to 31 May 1959 in Istanbul instead. Defending champion USSR secured the gold medal again. Behind the Soviet selection, Czechoslovakia took silver, bronze went to France . In addition to Israel , whose team started at the EM for political reasons, another non-European country was included in the field of participants, Iran .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in four groups with five or three four teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the semi-finals and were already eighth. The remaining teams played in the placement rounds for the 9th EM place.

First place was necessary in order to be able to participate in the games for 9th place. The second rank of each group entitled to play for 12th place, while the last three placed had to contest the placement games for European Championship rank 15.
