Jānis Krūmiņš or Janis Kruminsch (born January 30, 1930 in Raiskums , Latvia ; † November 21, 1994 in Riga ) was a Latvian basketball player who competed internationally for the Soviet Union.

successes

The 2.18 m tall Krūmiņš from ASK Riga was with his club several times Soviet national champion in the 1950s. In 1958, 1959 and 1960, Riga won the FIBA European Cup , and in 1961, Riga was defeated in the final against CSKA Moscow.

With the national basketball team of the USSR Jānis Krūmiņš won three Olympic silver medals: 1956 in Melbourne , 1960 in Rome and 1964 in Tokyo, the Soviet team was defeated by the United States . Most points in an Olympic game get Krūmiņš 1956, when he contributed 27 points to the 56:49 victory over France in the semifinals .

Krūmiņš won the European Championship three times with the USSR team, in 1959 before Czechoslovakia and France, in 1961 before Yugoslavia and Bulgaria and in 1963 before Poland and Yugoslavia.

Jānis Krūmiņš was a trained locksmith, after his sporting career he worked as a metal sculptor.
