At the XVII. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , a competition in hockey (men) was held. The hockey tournament lasted from August 26th to September 11th. The venues were the Velodrome, the Marble Stadium (Stadio del Marmi) and the Campo Tre Fontane.
Tournament mode
With 16 participants and 45 games, the tournament in Rome was the largest Olympic hockey tournament to date. It was played in four preliminary round groups:
- Group A: Denmark, India, New Zealand, Netherlands
- Group B: Australia, Japan, Pakistan, Poland
- Group C: Germany, France, Italy, Kenya
- Group D: Belgium, Great Britain, Switzerland, Spain
Since only the points counted for the table order, playoffs had to be played in groups A and B.
The first two of each preliminary group made it to the quarter-finals. Who lost there, played for places 5-8, the quarter-final winners made it to the semi-finals. The group fourth then played from places 13-15, as Denmark waived. The group third played from places 9-11, as Poland waived.
German team
Since the NOK of the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR did not agree on a common team, qualifying games with a home and return leg were scheduled. After the first round, each team had won a game. Therefore a second round was necessary. In this, the highly favored selection of the German Hockey Association prevailed against the selection of the German Hockey Sports Association . The results:
- Round 1: first leg on April 24, 1960 in Cologne, FRG - GDR 3: 0, second leg on April 30, 1960 in Jena, GDR - FRG 4: 1
- Round 2: first leg on May 26, 1960 in Cologne, FRG - GDR 0: 0, second leg on June 5, 1960 in Jena: GDR - FRG 0: 3

Rank 5–8
For the places 5–8, two qualifying games were played first, then the winners for place 5 played the losers for place 7.
The game between Australia and Kenya was still a draw after 40 minutes of extra time. Because of the falling darkness, the referees decided by tossing a coin that Australia would be the winner. Australia then also played the game for 5th place the next day, but Kenya successfully protested, a second qualifying game was scheduled and the game for 5th place was canceled. The game for 7th place was not played. Germany could not compete for "unforeseeable reasons", as the IOC report says. Germany and Kenya were therefore both placed 7th. |
