Abdul Hamid (hockey player, 1927)
Abdul Hamid (born January 7, 1927 in Bunno , Sindh ; † July 12, 2019 ) was a Pakistani hockey player . The outstanding striker of the Pakistani national team took part in four Olympic Games, won two Olympic medals and scored over 200 international goals.
Pakistan gained independence on August 14, 1947, and a year later Pakistan took part in the Olympic Games for the first time. In 1948 in London and 1952 in Helsinki , the Pakistani hockey team took fourth place, in 1956 in Melbourne they reached the finals and after a 0-1 defeat against India with silver they won their first Olympic medal. After the team had beaten India for the first time in a major tournament at the Asian Games in 1958, the team, with Abdul Hamid as team captain, also won 1-0 over the Indians in Rome in 1960 .
In his main occupation, Abdul Hamid was a member of the Pakistani Army , in which he achieved the rank of major during his active career.
