The Heckinghausen gas tank , also known as the Heckinghauser gas boiler , is a 66.65 meter high former gas tank in the Heckinghausen district of Wuppertal that characterizes the cityscape .

history

The gas tank replaced the bell gas tank of the "Gasanstalt an der Mohrenstrasse" destroyed by the air raid on Wuppertal-Barmen in 1943 . Plans for reconstruction were already in place in 1946, but were only approved three years later by the Ministry of Economics of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The disk gas tank in low-pressure gas storage technology was built by the MAN plant in Gustavsburg between 1950 and 1952 and holds 60,000 m³ of gas. The shape of the building was executed on a ring-shaped foundation as a polygonal twenty-corner with individual sides of 5.9 meters each. The outer shell is formed by flange plates that are riveted vertically to the jacket posts and welded to them horizontally. A welded sheet steel floor forms the lower end. This construction is the first of its kind.

Three passageways surround the gas container at different heights . A zigzag external staircase leads to the sloping tin roof on which a circular ventilator sits enthroned. The elevator shaft also runs in a zigzag. The level indicator spans eleven flange plates on the west side. A scissor staircase with a maximum height of 54.6 meters leads inside from the roof to the gas pane.

In 1997 the gas tank was taken out of service and placed under monument protection the following year after extensive discussions in the district about demolition plans on the part of MAN.

Until its closure in 2018, the Butane Club was located directly next to the gas tank .

Work on the interior of the gas tank began in November 2018. A system catering restaurant, a fitness studio , a permanent exhibition on the subject of fantasy, illusion and 3D project mapping as well as the light show The Wonder Machine were created . In addition, a skywalk and a viewing platform were set up on the roof of the container. The gas boiler has been open to the public since June 15, 2019.
