Manzoor Hussain Atif

Manzoor Hussain Atif (born November 4, 1928 in Gujrat , † December 8, 2008 in Islamabad ) was a Pakistani hockey player and sports official. He was involved in winning all three of Pakistan's three Olympic hockey gold medals.

Life

Atif first took part in the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 and took fourth place with the Pakistani national team . In 1956 in Melbourne , the central defender reached an Olympic final with his team for the first time, but in which the team lost 1-0 to the team of the series winners India; the 1956 silver medal was the first ever Olympic medal for Pakistan. Four years later, Pakistan reached the final again in Rome in 1960 , in which India was defeated 1-0; this was the first defeat the Indians at the Olympic Games after six Olympic victories, at the same time it was the first gold medal for Pakistan. In his fourth Olympic participation in Tokyo in 1964 , Atif reached the final again, Pakistan defeated the Indians 0-1.

Even after the end of his playing career, Atif remained connected to the Pakistani hockey sport. As a manager and trainer, he was also involved in the two other Olympic victories of the Pakistani selection in 1968 in Mexico City and 1984 in Los Angeles .

Atif was Secretary General of the Pakistani Hockey Federation (PHF) and the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) for many years , from 1982 to 2001 he was Vice President of the AHF. Since 1994 he was the first non-European to head the rules commission of the World Hockey Federation (FIH).

In his main occupation Atif belonged to the Pakistani army , in which he rose to the rank of brigadier . He was married and had four children.
