At the XX. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , a men's hockey competition took place. The hockey tournament had been an integral part of the Summer Olympics since 1928 and since then India and later Pakistan had won the gold medal. In Munich, host Germany, another nation became Olympic champions for the first time.

Tournament mode

As in the previous games in Mexico City in 1968 , the 16 participants played in 2 groups A and B, each against each other. The first and second of the groups contested the semi-finals and then played for the medals. The third and fourth of the groups also played places 5 to 8. Places 9 to 16 were determined without cross games in a direct comparison between the two fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth of the groups.

The 10 participants in the first World Cup , which took place in Barcelona in 1971, were qualified , including the host of the Olympic Games in Germany. The other six participants were determined through qualifying tournaments, in Europe: Belgium, Great Britain, Poland, in Asia / Oceania: Malaysia, New Zealand, and in America: Mexico.

After a goal by Michael Krause in the 60th minute through a converted penalty corner , the hosts won the final in front of 000000000015000.000000000015,000 spectators 1-0 against defending champions Pakistan.

In the final, the German team played with Peter Kraus ( Rüsselsheimer RK ) - Michael Peter ( HC Heidelberg ) - Dieter Freise (HC Heidelberg), Michael Krause ( Schwarz-Weiß Köln ), Eduard Thelen ( Rot-Weiss Köln ) - Horst Dröse ( SC Frankfurt 1880 ), Carsten Keller ( Berliner HC ) - Ulrich Klaes (Rot-Weiss Köln), Wolfgang Baumgart (SC Frankfurt 1880), Uli Vos ( Gladbacher HTC ) and Peter Trump ( TG Frankenthal ). There was a scandal at the award ceremony when the Pakistani players and their supporters abused the German players and spectators and refused to pay homage to the German flag on the winners' podium. As a consequence, the IOC banned the Pakistani players from the Olympic Games and international games outside of Pakistan. After President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had apologized to the German government, the team was pardoned in 1976.

Since the IOC only awarded gold medals to the 13 players who played in the final, Federal Foreign Minister Walter Scheel ordered five replicas for the reserve players on his account.
