Werner Kaessmann

Werner Kaessmann (born July 12, 1947 in Unna ) is a former German hockey player who became Olympic champion in 1972 .

Career

Werner Kaessmann is the son of the national hockey player Otto Kaessmann , he started playing at TSC Eintracht Dortmund . He later moved to Rot-Weiss Cologne ; with Cologne Kaessmann became German champions in field hockey in 1972, 1973 and 1974 , and in 1974 and 1978 the Cologne team also won indoor hockey. Kaessmann played all roles on the left, from full-back to left winger.

He made his debut in 1969 in the German national hockey team . At the first world championship in field hockey , Kaessmann was fifth with the German team. In 1972 he and his Cologne teammates Wolfgang Strödter , Ulrich Klaes and Eduard Thelen were part of the squad for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . During the tournament Kaessmann was in six games, but was only on the bench in the final. Nevertheless, he also received the gold medal after the 1-0 victory over world champions Pakistan.

That is why he was awarded the silver bay leaf on September 11, 1972.

Kaessmann won the bronze medal with the German team at the world championships in 1973 , 1975 and 1978 , was European indoor champion in 1974 and fifth in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal . Werner Kaessmann played a total of 114 international matches from 1969 to 1978, 18 of them indoors.

Kaessmann is a lawyer and notary, in 2004 he became an honorary general syndic of the ADAC . From 1998 to 2010 he was President of the Royal Saint Barbara's Golf Club in Dortmund.
