Kitty von Escherich (ca.1898)

Katharina von Escherich ( Kitty von Escherich ) (born November 25, 1855 in Varaždin , Croatia, † October 4, 1916 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer .

Live and act

Her father Josef Mathias Haus (* 1807 in Windischgrätz; † 1859 in Graz) was the estate manager in Warasdin. Her mother was Maria, geb. Walter (born October 28, 1817 in Olomouc / Moravia; † March 3, 1892 in Bubnjarci).

She was born as Katharina Haus, the youngest sister of the later Grand Admiral Anton Haus , and studied piano with Julius Epstein and composition with Franz Krenn at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna . On July 2, 1878 she had the "Concurs of the training school for composition" and received the 2nd prize. On the same day, six other music students had their exams: Gustav Mahler , Mathilde Kralik von Meyrswalden, Hans Rott , Rudolf Pichler, Ernst Ludwig and Rudolph Kryzanowsky.

When she left the conservatory in 1878, the traceability of her musical career was interrupted for many years. The background is most likely the marriage with the mathematician Prof. Dr. Gustav von Escherich (born June 1, 1849 - † January 28, 1935) and the further relocation of the family. Her husband was appointed professor at the University of Chernivtsi in January 1879 and a year later, on March 7, 1880, their son Oskar was born (lawyer; † July 25, 1943, Linz). In 1882 the couple returned to Graz, where their husband worked as a professor at the Technical University. The family only really settled down in 1884, when Gustav von Escherich was appointed to the University of Vienna, where he even became rector in 1903/04. Her final domicile was in Vienna at Dobelhoffgasse 7, where the composer ran a salon that was frequented by scientists and artists alike.

In 1913 she played an active role in the founding of the Bach Community of Vienna , whose president was later her former fellow student Mathilde Kralik von Meyrswalden . She wrote sacred choral works, vocal quartets, songs, piano works and chamber music. Her written estate is in the archive of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna . She was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

In the literature, there are other spellings for Katharina von Escherich: Katharina Haus, Kitty von Escherich-Haus, Kitty von Escherich, Katharina von Escherich-Haus.

Her daughter Maria Theresia Escherich (* 1882) was a member of the Vienna Musician Club .
