Julius Epstein (born August 7, 1832 in Agram / Zagreb , Austrian Empire ; died March 3, 1926 in Vienna ) was an Austrian pianist .

Life

Julius Epstein was a student of the choir conductor Vatroslav Lichtenegger in Zagreb , in Vienna he studied composition with Johann Rufinatscha and piano with Anton Halm . He made his debut in 1852 and soon became one of the most famous pianists and piano teachers in Vienna.

From 1867 to 1901 he was a professor at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna . Among his students were Ignaz Brüll , Marcella Sembrich , Gustav Mahler , Moriz Violin and Mathilde Kralik von Meyrswalden.

Among other things, Epstein published Beethoven's piano sonatas , Mendelssohn's complete piano works and Schubert's critically reviewed complete edition .

Julius Epstein found his final resting place in the new Jewish section of the Vienna Central Cemetery (Gate 4, Group 3, Row 4, No. 2).

His wife was Amalie Epstein nee Mauthner divorced Rawack (* 1835 Pest, † December 15, 1915 Vienna), with whom he was married from 1865. The couple had three children.

The two daughters Rudolfine (cellist) and Eugénie (violinist) made a very successful tour through Germany and Austria from 1876 to 1877. The son Richard (1869–1919) was also professor of piano at the Vienna Conservatory.
