Ulrich Klaes

Ulrich Klaes (born February 1, 1946 in Essen ) is a former German hockey player and Olympic champion .

Ulrich Klaes became German field hockey champion with Rot-Weiss Köln in 1972 , after Cologne had previously been runner-up several times. In 1973 and 1974 the Cologne team won the title again.

The right winger with a 100-meter best time of less than eleven seconds made his debut in the German national hockey team in 1971 . In 1972 Klaes was appointed to the squad for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , with three international matches he was the player with the least international experience in the squad at the time. During the Olympic Games he ousted Detlev Kittstein from the regular team and was also part of the team in the semifinals and finals. In the final against the reigning world champion from Pakistan, the Germans won 1-0 with a goal from Michael Krause . Ulrich Klaes played a total of 9 international matches from 1971 to 1972.

For winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on September 11, 1972 .

Today Ulrich Klaes works as a businessman in the fuel industry.
