Eduard Thelen

Eduard Thelen (born July 7, 1946 in Cologne ) is a former German hockey player who became Olympic champion in 1972.

Eduard Thelen took second place in the German championship four times with Rot-Weiss Köln , before the defensive midfielder won the title for the first time in 1972, followed by two more championship titles in 1973 and 1974.

In 1969 Thelen made his debut in the German national team . After he had already participated in tournaments in Lahore and Bombay, he was also part of the squad at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In total, Werner Kaessmann , Ulrich Klaes , Wolfgang Strödter and Eduard Thelen were four players of the reigning German champions in the 1972 Olympic squad. Thelen was used in all nine games, including the final in the first Olympic victory of the German hockey team. Eduard Thelen played a total of 38 international matches from 1969 to 1972. For winning the gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he and the entire Olympic hockey team were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on September 11, 1972 .

Eduard Thelen works as an orthopedist in Cologne.
