Two hockey competitions were held at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the Australian metropolis of Sydney .

The venue was the Hockey Center in the Sydney Olympic Park . For the first time at the Olympic Games there were 3 points for a win! A draw still counted 1 point. Both Olympic champions from Atlanta in 1996 were able to defend their titles and won gold again.

Men's

Game mode

The twelve teams played in two groups A and B each against each other . The two best in the group, the 3rd and 4th of the groups and the 5th and 6th then played in the knockout system for places 1 to 4, 5 to 8 and 9 to 12.

Tournament course

In the first game of the tournament, the Netherlands beat Great Britain 4-2. The German men had to play against Great Britain in the last group game. A win would have been enough to win the group, a draw would have been enough for second place in the group, but they lost this crucial game 2-1. The German men's team, which was one of the favorites, did not reach the semi-finals. After completing the group games, South Korea and India were tied on points and goals, the direct comparison brought South Korea to 2nd place in Group B and thus to the semi-finals.

The Australians finished the group stage first in the group B and had to face the Netherlands in the semi-finals. After 70 minutes of regular time and 15 minutes of extra time, there was no winner of the game, so it came to the seven-meter shooting. The Dutch won 5: 4 because their husband, Ronald Jansen, held the last shot of Australian Brent Livermore. In the second semifinals, the team from South Korea prevailed against the group top of Group A Pakistan. The Dutch team won the final against South Korea again in the seven-meter shoot-out, bronze went to the Australians, who beat the Pakistani 6-3.

Group A

Pakistan and the Netherlands qualified for the semi-finals. The better goal difference brought the Dutch compared to the Germans tied for points. They missed the semi-finals in the last group game due to the defeat against Great Britain.
