The athletes of the People's Republic of China dominated the badminton competitions. This is evident from the fact that they won gold medals in four of the five competitions. With eight out of a total of fifteen medals to be awarded, the Chinese won over half of all medals in this sport. Two European nations won medals in Sydney, one silver and one bronze. So that the result was badminton competitions at the 1992 Summer Olympics of Barcelona set. However, as at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , the Dane Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen could not book a gold medal in the men's singles. In Atlanta, the gold medals in the five badminton competitions went to four different nations. Even if the Chinese took home two gold medals back then, there was no dominance in this sport.

The men's individual badminton tournament was held between September 17 and 23, 2000. In the round of 32, the American Kevin Han won in two sets with 15: 5 and 15: 3 against the Canadian Mike Beres . It was the first ever American victory in badminton at the Olympic Games, which is why the daughter of American President Bill Clinton , Chelsea Clinton , congratulated him. In the last sixteen he was eliminated from the eventual Olympic champion. The tournament was dominated by the athletes from Asia. Of the eight players who reached the quarter-finals, seven came from Asian countries. Only the Dane Peter Gade was able to prevail alongside them and even reached the small final for the bronze medal. There he was defeated by the Chinese Xia Xuanze with 13:15 and 5:15 in two sets . Ji Xinpeng from the People's Republic of China and Hendrawan from Indonesia qualified for the final .
