In the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo five competitions in badminton discharged.

There will be two individual competitions for women and men as well as three double competitions ( men's doubles , ladies doubles , mixed ). After London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016, there is again a combination of group games and a knockout phase . In order to participate in the games, the athletes have to go through an almost one-year qualification .

The venue is the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza , engl. for the Musashino no mori sōgō sports plaza ( 武 蔵 野 の 森 総 合 ス ポ ー ツ プ ラ ザ ) on the border between the cities of Chōfu and Fuchū in Tokyo prefecture .

qualification

Qualification is based on the badminton world rankings . As of April 30, 2020, a total of 16 quota places in each double competition and 38 quota places in each individual competition will be awarded according to the following criteria:

  • Singles:
    • Places 1 to 16: A maximum of 2 players per nation can receive a quota place, provided they are both placed in the top 16.
    • From 17th place: The remaining quota places are allocated according to the placements. A nation may receive a maximum of one quota place.
  • Double:
    • Places 1 to 8: A maximum of 2 couples per nation can receive a quota place, provided they are both placed in the top 8.
    • From place 9: The remaining quota places are allocated according to the placements. A nation may receive a maximum of one quota place.

Results

In these Olympic Games, the first round is again played in groups. There are 13 groups in each of the two individual disciplines and four groups in each of the two double disciplines and in mixed doubles. The group winners in the individual and first and second in the double disciplines qualify for the knockout phase.
