A total of six horse riding competitions are to be held at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo .

An individual and a team competition each take place in the disciplines of dressage , show jumping and eventing . All competitions are mixed competitions.

Changes in the program

The efforts of the International Olympic Committee to further internationalize the Olympic competitions prompted the World Equestrian Federation FEI to make massive changes in all three disciplines. All three disciplines made the change that there is no more discarded result per team, so the results of each team rider are included in the result.

There is a much stricter separation of individual and team competitions in dressage and show jumping. In show jumping, the individual competition consists of two jumping-time jumping competitions and, if necessary, a jump-off. The team competition is structured in the same way. Neither test has an effect on both competitions.

In dressage, the Grand Prix de Dressage qualifies for individual and team competitions. However, it is no longer an examination. The Grand Prix will instead be converted into six group decisions. The Grand Prix Spécial counts exclusively for the team classification. The individual competition will be decided in the Grand Prix Freestyle.

In  terms of versatility, the course of the partial exams remains unchanged, but the changes are massive: So far, the Olympic competitions in this discipline have been held at the CCI 5 * -L level (formerly known as CCI 4 *). Since only a limited number of riders and nations can cope with this highest level of sport, the level will be lowered to CCI 4 * level (formerly: CCI 3 *). Due to the high probability of a horse-rider pair being eliminated from the event, special regulations have been made for this: A rider who is eliminated receives 100 or 200 minus points depending on the sub-discipline and can take part in the remaining partial tests for the team evaluation. The reserve rider of a nation can also replace a teammate in the following partial tests (for example due to a fall in the field) for 20 minus points on the team result.

The idea initially expressed to carry out two completely separate events for individual and team (similar to Sydney 2000 ) was not realized , whereby only the team competitions would have been lowered to 4 * level. Despite the considerable effects and initially clear protests, the German Equestrian Federation was one of the few in the FEI vote to speak out against the changes in eventing.

The strongest protest against changes came from the International Jumping Riders Club (IJRC), which represents the interests of top show jumpers. In particular, the club spoke out against the omission of the fourth team rider and thus the cancellation result in show jumping. The opportunity created in this way to enable more teams to start does not make sense, as not enough nations can provide sufficiently powerful teams. Instead, the IJRC spoke out in favor of a smaller number of teams in order to enable start opportunities for strong individual riders from many nations.
