Twelve teams each take part in the tournament for women and men. You will initially play in two preliminary round groups with six teams each. There are three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, two points for a 3-2 win, one point for a 2-3 defeat and one point for a 1-3 or 3-0 defeat no point. The four best teams from each group qualify for the quarter-finals. The group winners meet the group fourth, while the pairings of the group second and third place are drawn. From the quarter-finals on, the simple knockout system continues until the final.
The group classification was published at the end of January. It took place in the serpentine system, with Japan being placed first in Group A as hosts, while the position in the world rankings was decisive for the other qualified teams.
Japan is set as the host. For men and women, eleven other teams each qualified for the Olympic tournament. In August 2019, six international qualification tournaments took place, the winners of which secured a starting place. The remaining five places were awarded in January 2020 at continental qualifying tournaments.
The German national teams each lost the final of their European qualifying tournament and are therefore not in Tokyo. The men lost to France in Berlin and the women to Turkey in Apeldoorn .
