The Japanese men's national volleyball team is a selection of the best Japanese players represented by the Japan Volleyball Association in international tournaments and internationals. Japan is one of the most successful teams on the continent with nine titles at the Asian Championships . Internationally, the national team celebrated their greatest successes in the 1970s with the Olympic victory in 1972 and two third places at the World Championships in 1970 and 1974.

history

World championships

When he first participated in a volleyball world championship , Japan finished eighth in 1960. The Japanese then climbed from fifth to third place, which they achieved in 1970 and 1974. After that, however, the results - apart from fourth place in 1982 - were significantly worse and were between ninth and eleven places. In 1998 the team did not get beyond 16th place. At the 2006 World Cup in their own country, Japan finished eighth and 2010 in Italy thirteenth. Four years later, the Japanese missed qualifying for the 2014 World Cup and were not represented for the first time since 1956. At the 2018 tournament, they were eliminated in the first group stage and finished in 17th place.

Olympic games

At the first Olympic volleyball tournament in Tokyo in 1964 , the hosts won bronze. At the 1968 Games they were only defeated by the Soviet Union in the final. In 1972 in Munich , Japan became Olympic champion with a victory against the GDR . At the 1976 tournament it was enough for fourth place. In 1984 (seventh) and 1988 (tenth) the Japanese performed worse and after finishing sixth in 1992 they were absent from the Olympics for a few years. In 2008 in Beijing , the Japanese were back, but were eliminated without a win after the preliminary round. They missed the 2012 and 2016 tournaments again. In the 2020 Olympic Games Japan is set to host.

Asian Championships

Japan became the first Asian champion in the 1975 final against South Korea . After a third place in 1979, the Japanese won the title again in 1983 against China , which they successfully defended four years later. In 1989 they were defeated by the host South Korea, which they defeated in 1991. After a third place in 1993, the next title followed in 1995. At the next tournament in 1997, China took revenge. Japan then finished fourth in 1999 and third two years later. In 2003 the team achieved their worst result to date with seventh place. In 2005 the Japanese became Asian champions for the sixth time, and in 2007 they lost to Australia . In 2009 in the final against Iran they won for the seventh time. Fifth in 2011 and fourth in 2013, they missed the medal ranks twice. In the 2015 finals against Iran and 2017 against Kazakhstan , they won eighth and ninth titles. They finished the 2019 tournament in third place.

World cup

In the first edition of the World Cup in 1965, Japan finished fourth. In 1969 the Japanese lost to the West German team , in 1977 to the Soviet Union. Three six places followed. Then there were places four and five for Japan. From 1999 to 2011, the Japanese performed worse with tenth and ninth place. After a sixth place in 2015, they rose to fourth place in 2019.

Nations League

In the Nations League 2018 , the Japanese took twelfth place. In 2019 they finished tenth.

World league

Japan played from 1990 to 1997 and from 2001 to 2007 in the World League with but never got beyond the preliminary round. In 2008, the Japanese took sixth place for the third time after 1990 and 1993. In 2009 they failed again in the preliminary round. After a break in 2010, the Japanese failed again in the preliminary round in 2011. In the further years up to 2017 there were still double-digit placements.
