At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , six equestrian decisions were held from August 6th to 19th, 2016 in the Olympic Equestrian Center on the grounds of the Deodoro Military Club . The program included an individual and a team decision in dressage , show jumping and eventing . The program is largely unchanged compared to 2012 , but the number of riders per team has changed in terms of dressage and eventing. Women and men traditionally compete together.

Changes in the program

While far-reaching changes are planned for the equestrian competitions for the 2020 Olympic Games, the program of the 2016 Games was hardly changed compared to the previous Summer Games.

After the number of team riders in dressage at the 2008 and 2012 summer games had been reduced to three, this was increased again to up to four riders for 2016. The results of the three best team riders remained unchanged in the results of a team. The team ranking was determined by the dressage riders again in the Grand Prix de Dressage and in the Grand Prix Spécial . The classic Grand Prix Spécial was ridden in Rio de Janeiro again, in London only a shortened Grand Prix Spécial had been selected as a task four years earlier.

Construction delays and disease protection

After the 2007 Pan-American Games were held in Rio de Janeiro, the sports facilities built for the Pan-American Games could be used for the Olympic equestrian competitions. The riding facilities were rebuilt again. The construction work was interrupted for 20 days in January / February 2016 because the contracted construction company was terminated due to construction delays and non-compliance with deadlines. Then the construction work could resume, so the accommodation for the grooms and the veterinary clinic still had to be completed.

After the Pan American Games in 2007, the Brazilian military used the riding facility. Already at the beginning of 2015, in good time before the start of the test tests, the horses that had previously been at the venue and the horses that are located on the way from the airport to the sports facility were removed from the region for quarantine and epidemic protection reasons. The reason for this was that Brazil is considered a snot distribution area and that is the only way Deodoro could be considered disease-free.

Nevertheless, in April 2015 at least two horses were diagnosed with snot at the Olympic equestrian center. However, this only became public in August of that year, and a report to the World Organization for Animal Health was only to be made a little later as part of a semi-annual report.

In October 2015, the final end for the Olympic equestrian competitions in Rio was threatened: There were disagreements between the World Equestrian Federation ( FEI) and the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture regarding the import regulations for horses. The FEI called for the veterinary examinations to be carried out more quickly in order to keep the stress and strain on the horses as low as possible. Therefore, it was considered to outsource the equestrian competitions (as at the Olympic Summer Games 1956 to another venue outside of Brazil). A good month later, after talks between the European Union and Brazil, it was announced that the problems had been resolved.

The eventing riders reopened the equestrian program at the Olympic Games. Just one day after the opening ceremony, on August 6th, the first riders laid the foundation for their individual and team results. The program corresponds to the great classic "three day events" which - contrary to their name - last four days. In contrast to the previous Olympic Games, the teams comprised only four instead of five riders, so that the teams only had one instead of two discarded results.

The dressage phase was held on August 6th and 7th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. One day later, all eventing riders and horses went on the cross-country course, the highlight of every eventing test. The time frame for this was five hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. local time.

On August 9, the participants initially had to go through the second vet check (veterinary medical examination, the first vet check took place on the day before the first partial examination). Then it went into the jumping phase. This last partial test was divided into two parts: First there was a team competition. This is a 600 meter jumping course with 11 to 12 no more than 125 cm high obstacles (maximum 16 jumps). Owing to the Olympic rule that no two medals should be awarded for the same performance, the best 25 individual riders competed again in a shortened jumping course. The height of the obstacles was up to 130 cm.

The three Russian eventing riders were not banned by the World Equestrian Federation FEI , see 2016 Summer Olympics / Participants (Russia) #Riding .

Partial dressage test

The German national trainers sent the two favorite German pairs to the start on the first of the two dressage days. In the morning, Sandra Auffarth and Opgun Louvo, a very strong pair in dressage, competed, but Auffarth made a few mistakes and scored 41.60 minus points. Michael Jung had to save after a canter mistake. He got 40.90 minus points with Sam , which roughly corresponds to his result in London 2012 (40.60 minus points at the time). On the morning of the second day, Julia Krajewski fulfilled her own expectations at her first international championship and stayed below 45 minus points. At the end of the dressage test, Ingrid Klimke secured the lead in the team classification for the German team with a very good dressage test, for which she received 39.50 points with Hale Bob OLD . With this result, Klimke was fourth after dressage. Happy was William Fox-Pitt, who has only been participating in tournaments since April 2016 after a serious fall in autumn of the previous year and was in the lead in Rio de Janeiro after the first partial test. With a result of exactly 37 minus points, he had a lead of over two points over third-placed Mathieu Lemoine. Christopher Burton came with the Hanoverian Santano II to an equally good 37.60 minus points and thus to second place in the interim ranking.

Partial test terrain

The off-road course from Rio de Janeiro was rated in advance as a full 4 * versatility . Ingrid Klimke compared the course with the off-road course of the Olympic Games 2000, since then there has not been such a difficult off-road course at the Olympic Games. The last water complex was seen as a particular challenge. In particular, an obstacle standing in the water was mentioned, which is designed as a frog. Its color did not stand out from the water, and it was a solid obstacle with a hard top edge.

The ground conditions were good on the off-road day and the temperatures were also below 30 ° C, more moderate than on the dressage days. The expectations regarding the difficulty were confirmed, whereby the course with its alternative lines at the obstacle complexes also gave the weaker starters the opportunity to finish the course safely. Nevertheless, there were six falls. In the subsequent assessment, Klimke stated that the off-road course had mentally challenged the horses far too much, and that the alternatives were not nicer for the horses due to constant turning and twining.

The off-road course was also challenging due to the time allowed, which was tight and the use of the alternative routes (almost) inevitably punished with minus points for exceeding the time. In the field there were only three participants who finished in the time: French team rider Astier Nicolas with Piaf de B'Neville succeeded as the second starter . In the second team riders , several top favorites followed one another on the starting list: Christopher Burton finished the terrain with the only nine-year-old Santano II without additional minus points. The second starter after him was William Fox-Pitt, who was the leader in dressage and who, with Chilli Morning , got 20 minus points for a refusal in addition to time errors . Shortly after him, Mark Todd only got two minus points (five seconds over the allowed time of 10 minutes and 15 seconds). Directly after Todd, Michael Jung was even 15 seconds faster than the allowed time (Jung: " ... I had calculated that in case I had to ride an extra lap somewhere. ").

Of the teams, Australia and New Zealand mastered the off-road day the best: Both teams had to accept the elimination of one rider each, but otherwise remained without refusal and with only a few negative points for exceeding the time. With a little more time overrun, but still four riders after the area, France also put itself in a good starting position for a medal. The German team riders did not meet expectations, with the exception of Michael Jungs: While successor Julia Krajewski was eliminated after three refusals, Sandra Auffarth initially received two refusals and (as a result) some minus points for exceeding the allowed time. While the second refusal was deleted from Auffarth's result after review, things didn't go any better for Ingrid Klimke either. With Hale Bob OLD she showed a convincing off-road performance up to the last water complex. Here she rode the direct route according to the instructions of the national coach, but did not get the second obstacle in the water properly ridden and so had to accept 20 minus points for a “runaway”.

While the US team (with only two riders left after the terrain) failed and none of the Russian team riders reached the finish, the hosts were able to place themselves in the midfield (sixth place) in the intermediate ranking after the off-road day.

The two jumping competitions in eventing took place on August 9, 2016.

In the first jumping competition, which was also the qualification for the final competition for the individual competition, the four teams with less than 200 minus points could hope for a medal. First the individual starters took to the course, then the first team riders of the nations followed, who still had four team riders after the site. This was followed by the riders with the third-best results so far from all nations, then those with the second-best results and finally the best-placed riders of each team.

The first riders of the New Zealanders and Australians blundered and brought the four teams close together with results of 8 and 17 penalty points, especially since both teams no longer had a deleted result. Eight penalty points from the third French rider left the French leadership behind. So the decision was made with the last riders of the four nations.

Germany had its theoretical chance of a team medal with two faultless rides in jumping. Michael Jung as the last German starter had already made no mistakes in the area with Sam FBW and confirmed his role as favorite in jumping with a faultless ride. Astier Nicolas also succeeded in this with Piaf de B'Neville .

With a ride without penalty points, Mark Todd could have secured New Zealand's first ever Olympic team title in eventing. With Leonidas II , however, he had four obstacle errors and 16 penalty points. There was particular pressure on Christopher Burton as the last starter: With Santano II he was able to secure the gold medal in Australia with no mistakes and also maintain his lead in the individual standings . He couldn't withstand the pressure either and received eight penalty points. With this, France moved up to first place and won the team gold medal. The German team also benefited, winning the silver medal.

Final result individual evaluation

The remaining 25 riders had to overcome a shorter course in the final jumping, the obstacles of 1.30 meters high and 5 cm higher than in the team jumping test. The allowed time was not a problem for the participants, but only seven riders with their horses remained in this test without obstacle errors. One of these faultless riders was Mark Todd, who was able to close his seventh Olympic Games with a sense of achievement after his poor performance in the team competition. Phillip Dutton was in fourth place before this test, but seemed to have missed his chance of a medal rank with four penalty points in the final jumping. Christopher Burton, still leading after the terrain, had to accept eight penalty points with Santano II after his eight penalty points in the team competition here in the individual competition and thus fell out of the circle of podium places.

Astier Nicolas, who had previously placed second with Piaf de B'Neville, had gained more distance from third place, but took advantage of this: Already at the second obstacle, a slate-gray oxer, he had to accept four penalty points, and he was the only rider to receive in this test Time penalties. Michael Jung had seven penalty points ahead of his ride with Sam FBW . However, he did not need this at all, Jung brought his dressage result through all the partial tests without any mistakes and is thus again individual Olympic champion after 2012.

In the team ranking, four riders from each qualified nation were allowed to start with one horse each (four years earlier the number was limited to three pairs per team). The three best results from the two team tests were included in the result, so teams with only three starters were able to achieve a result. This means that six results per team were included in the result, the average of which resulted in the overall result of each team.

The team competition started for the dressage riders on August 10th and 11th, 2016 with the Grand Prix de Dressage. The exam took place on both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The second team test, the Grand Prix Spécial, was due on August 12th. The best six teams were allowed to compete here as well as the best eight other riders who were not qualified through their teams.

The team tests also served as a qualification test for the individual decision. This fell in the Grand Prix Freestyle , for which the 18 best participants in the Grand Prix Spécial were still eligible. The freestyle took place on August 15th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Team ranking

On the first day of the Grand Prix, with the first female rider, the Dutch team had to accept the loss of their strike result. Adelinde Cornelissen's gelding Parzival had developed a fever the day before after an insect or spider sting. Therefore, he was given infusions (not relevant to doping / medication) . Since Madeleine Witte-Vrees and Danielle Heijkoop had rejected their nomination as substitute riders in the run-up to the Olympic Games, no substitute pair was available. The vets had no concerns about the start of Parzival on Grand Prix day . In the test, however, the 19-year-old gelding was limp and pushed his tongue out of his mouth several times. Adelinde Cornelissen therefore gave up. With results in the 75 and 76 percent range, the Netherlands came fourth in Grand Prix.

The gaps between the teams in positions one to four were already clear after the Grand Prix: the average for the Dutch was almost one percent and that of the Americans, who in turn were well behind the British (with an average of over 79 percent) . Germany found itself at least at the top of the intermediate ranking with an average of over 81 percent. Even the team's cancellation result, Sönke Rothenberger's 77.329 percent, was the seventh best result of all riders in the Grand Prix of Rio de Janeiro.

The Dutch had to present in the Grand Prix Spécial, the three leading nations up to this point alternately presented the 12 last starters in the test. Erward Gal as the first starter for the Netherlands was given a vote by the judges, mostly with grades in the 7 range; the greeting constellations at the beginning and at the end of the test, the assembled gallop and the two-man exchange lowered his grade to 73.655%. His teammates were able to increase the daily average to 74.991 percent. With rides by Kasey Perry-Glass and Steffen Peters, which were rather weaker for their own level, the Americans fell behind the Netherlands in the meantime. With an individual best result in an international Grand Prix Spécial by Laura Graves and Verdades (80.644%), the result of the United States increased again noticeably and secured them the bronze medal.

The German riders confirmed their achievements the day before: Sönke Rothenberger came with Cosmo despite clear deductions in the single and double changes as well as in the strong canter to over 76 percent, Dorothee Schneider to over 82 percent and Kristina Bröring-Sprehe to over 81 percent. Isabell Werth's mare Weihegold OLD achieved her best international result in a Grand Prix Spécial, 83.711 percent. Immediately after her, as the last starter pair, Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro competed . Shortly after the start of the task, Dujardin made a mistake, Valegro galloped up instead of the left traversal. Another mistake in the two exchanges meant that their otherwise very highly rated ride came to a result of 82.983 percent. Thus the victory of the German team and the silver medal for the British team was certain.

Individual evaluation

Although the individual evaluation of the best 18 riders was determined exclusively on the basis of the results of the Grand Prix Freestyle, the results of the team tests indicated an exciting decision for the individual medals: While Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro were still in the lead in the Grand Prix, she came in the Grand Prix ​​Spécial only came in second. In the Grand Prix Spécial, the gap between the best and third place rider was only a good one percent, five riders achieved results of over 80 percent with their horses.

Although he came tenth in the Grand Prix Spécial, Sönke Rothenberger was the fourth German rider to not be allowed to compete in the Grand Prix Freestyle, as only three riders per nation were allowed here.

The test was opened by Steffen Peters, who had only achieved 74.622% in his fourth Olympic Games in the Grand Prix Spécial with Legolas . In the Grand Prix Freestyle both showed themselves to be better after a two-day test break and achieved a result of over 79 percent, which gave him the lead for a long time. The first starter of the second third of the test, Hans Peter Minderhoud with his stallion Johnson (80.571%), was able to take the lead from them. The judges rated a total of ten riders with their horses with grades of over 80 percent.

The gelding Nip Tuck , presented by Carl Hester, earned one of the highest marks of his career (82.553%) . The decision about the medal was made in the last third of the starting field: Here, Kristina Bröring-Sprehe and Desperados FRH first entered the arena. Bröring-Sprehe subsequently stated that in the end the air was a little out and that the hot weather was causing problems for Desperados . Without any real weaknesses, both convinced the judges and were rewarded with 87.142 percent. Immediately after her, the defending champion was due to start: Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro received various grades in the 9 and 10 range from the judges for their freestyle, which earned them a B grade of 97.714 percent and an overall result of 93.857 percent.

After Dujardin, Dorothee Schneider tried to attack Showtime FRH with the ten-year-old gelding . Both shone in their parade class, the passage, where three of the seven judges gave them a 10 as a grade. However, too many mistakes crept in, so that in the end an overall result of 82.946% was established and the individual medal that had been hoped for could no longer be achieved. Severo Jesus Jurado López was the next starter in front of them, the rider cheered the audience with Lorenzo , but the result of (only) 83.553 percent also caused boos in the audience. The 29-year-old American Laura Graves was even more convincing among the judges, although she only received a single 10 with Verdades , but her consistently (very) good performance led to an overall rating of 85.196 percent. Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD were the last couple to enter the dressage arena. Here, too, there were consistently high and highest grades, which resulted in a rating of 89.071 and thus the silver medal rank in the individual evaluation. For Werth this was the tenth medal at the Olympic Games, while for Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro it was clear that they would defend their titles.

The show jumping program started with the first qualification for individual evaluation. Unlike the other international championships, this was not a time jumping competition , but a jumping competition based on mistakes , consisting of one round. This test was carried out on August 14, 2016 between 10:00 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.

On August 16 and 17, the second test was due: This was the second qualification for the individual evaluation and the team decision. As usual in Nations Cups, the teams compete in a jumping competition with two rounds . In contrast to normal national prices, however, these were two different rounds, one round per day was carried out.

Each team consisted of up to four riders and their horses; the results of the best three riders per team and round counted for the team result. The best eight teams from the first round made it to the second round of the test. In the event of a tie in one of the medal ranks, the regulations provided for a jump-off. In this all riders of the teams concerned started again in a shortened course.

Since this test also counts for the qualification for the individual finals, the best 60 participants of the first individual qualification should definitely take part in the first round, regardless of whether they were part of a team. The same applied in the second round of the test for the 45 best riders in the individual ranking.

Ten less riders were allowed to start on the last day of the individual competition. On August 19, 2016, the participants competed in a second jumping competition with two rounds from 10 a.m. local time. All penalty points collected up to this point were deleted before the test, so that all participants started with the same starting conditions. In the second round on the same day, the 20 best riders of the first round were allowed to start again. If there was a tie on one of the medal ranks after these two rounds, a jump-off was planned.

First qualification

For most of the riders, the first qualification test was only a first check of their form. The main faults of the course were the final line (double combination with a subsequent distance to the last obstacle) and, especially at the beginning of the starting field, the water ditch.

In the individual evaluation, the test served to reduce the starting field from 75 to 60 riders; for the Nations Cup, the starting order was determined based on the results of this jumping competition. However, the results of the riders from this test will not be used for the team evaluation. The Ukraine team, in particular, benefited from this arrangement and despite the fall of Cassio Rivetti and the retirement of Ferenc Szentirmai after a second refusal in the Nations Cup, they can start with four riders. But things did not go as planned for all of the team riders at other nations either: Pénélope Leprevost (France) fell shortly after her mare Flora de Mariposa came up unlucky after a jump. Jur Vrieling (Netherlands) was also eliminated after his horse Zirocco Blue refused for the second time. On top of that, Vrieling was disqualified (for the individual evaluation) due to excessive use of whips. Nicola Philippaerts , who only started as a single rider, was also disqualified due to excessive use of spurs.

In addition to the aforementioned participants, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Daniel Bluman (16 penalty points each) were not among the best 60 riders. The result of 24 penalty points from Emanuele Gaudiano with Caspar was also surprising . This worst result of all completed rides brought him to 67th place in the individual ranking.

Team ranking

Nations Cup, first day

The first round of the Nations Cup was less demanding than was expected during the course inspection. The German national trainer Otto Becker rated the course as “ difficult in terms of dimensions, but technically too easy. "

Four teams (Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States) managed to get three of their four riders without penalty points. These teams start without mistakes on the second day of the Nations Cup. Things went just as well for France, with only one time penalty on the first day. A team result of a maximum of eight penalty points was required in order to be among the eight best teams and thus be allowed to start on the second Nations Cup day. In addition to the nations mentioned, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland also succeeded in this.

The gold medal winners from London 2012, Great Britain, were eliminated with a team result of 13 penalty points. The officials, who disqualified one team rider from the Brazilians (Stephan de Freitas Barcha) and one from the Ukrainians (Cassio Rivetti) due to minor spore injuries, were again consistent.

The course on the second day was much more demanding. There were mistakes all over the course. Challenging for the riders were the triple combination at the end of the course (Oxer - Steep Jump - Oxer) as well as the tight time allowed, which caused some errors in the final Oxer. A two-fold combination was also unusual, consisting of two wall-like plank jumps decorated with the wave pattern of the Copacabana beach promenade .

Three of the eight teams went into the second day of the Nations Cup with only three riders and therefore had no discarded result: Brazil due to the disqualification of Stephan de Freitas Barcha, the Netherlands due to the refusal of Jur Vrieling (his horse Zirocco Blue had two previously contested rides did not finish the course due to refusals) and the United States (Beezie Madden refused to start due to a tendon injury by Cortes'C ' ).

The French mastered this round best: The three first team riders only got two time penalty points. Since the United States had already collected five penalty points with their first two riders and the other nations had to accept a higher number of penalty points, it was already clear after Roger-Yves Bost (the third French rider) that France would be the team -Gold medal for sure. The subsequent faultless ride by McLain Ward also brought the decision for the silver medal, which the United States could no longer take away.

The decision for bronze became a three-way battle in the round of the fourth rider of each team: The Canadians had to submit, a ride without mistakes by Eric Lamaze and Fine Lady brought Canada to a total of eight penalty points. Brazil was able to achieve this, but five penalty points from Pedro Veniss prevented Brazil from getting a team medal.

As on the first day of the Nations Cup, Germany was drawn to the last place on the second day of the Nations Cup. For the first three German riders, things didn't go as expected that day, each of them got four penalty points for an obstacle error. Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum was also just too slow with Fibonacci and therefore received a time penalty on top. In order to get a total of eight penalty points like Canada, Ludger Beerbaum, who had not had a faultless ride in Rio de Janeiro so far, had to stay faultless. As has often been the case in his career, he was the fourth rider in the Nations Cup. With Casello he withstood the pressure and crossed the finish line without any mistakes. This made a jump for bronze necessary.

In the jump Yann Candele got four penalty points as a first starter, Christian Ahlmann remained Taloubet Z errors. Tied in second place on the grid, Tiffany Foster and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum each got through the jump-off without any mistakes. Amy Millar made an obstacle error with Heros . This gave Daniel Deußer the opportunity to make the decision as the third rider of the German team. At his first Olympic Games he made no mistakes in the jump- off course with First Class , the German show jumping team won an Olympic team medal for the first time since 2004.

Individual evaluation

Second and third qualifications

After favorites like Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Pénélope Leprevost had already been eliminated in the first qualification, the two rounds of the Nations Cup (as the second and third qualification of the individual classification) thinned out the field. In the first round, the number of riders still qualified for the individual evaluation was reduced to 45. For example, Beezie Madden (who retired due to an injury to her horse), Malin Baryard-Johnsson and John Whitaker were eliminated. For the latter, this round was extremely unfortunate: After he had still been faultless in the first qualification, he got 23 penalty points here with Ornellaia .

After the second round of the Nations Cup (third individual qualification), the Olympic Games were over for ten other riders. On the one hand, this affected the riders of the nations, who until now had all four riders in the individual ranking. Since only three riders per nation were allowed in the individual finals, the fourth placed riders were eliminated. This hit Ludger Beerbaum (18th place after the third qualification) and Janika Sprunger (23rd place). Due to his placement, Ulrich Kirchhoff left here . With the gelding Prince de la Mare , who was only taken over at the beginning of the year , he had to accept 17 penalty points in the second round of the Nations Cup.

Bottom line

Before the individual finals, the results of the 35 qualified riders were reset to zero. Similar to the Nations Cup, the two rounds in the individual final were differentiated in terms of difficulty. The first round of the test was rather less demanding in relation to the level of the remaining starting field. Thirteen riders and their horses made no mistakes, two more only allowed themselves a time penalty. Having started with a lot of commitment, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum did not find a suitable distance to the first obstacle with Fibonacci . Her gelding still jumped off, but landed her hindquarters in the obstacle. Both were uninjured, but Michaels-Beerbaum gave up after the second obstacle.

Both circuits took place on one day, but there was a break of around 90 minutes between the circuits. The second round of the individual final was made more demanding according to the result of the first round and the time allowed was deliberately chosen to be tight. The regulations stipulated that the 20 best riders of the first round would qualify for this round. Since at the Olympic Games outside of the jump-off, however, the time was not included in the results and several riders with four penalty points were together in 16th place in the intermediate ranking, the starting field increased to 26 participants with their horses.

Although the course demanded full concentration from the participants and five riders got more than 12 penalty points, six participants managed a second fault-free ride on that day and thus made it into the jump-off. The two remaining riders starting for Germany ( Christian Ahlmann and Daniel Deußer ), Martin Fuchs and René Tebbel, who had not made any obstacle errors in all the jumping courses in Rio de Janeiro up to this point, each got one obstacle error . “Unlucky” of the second round was Jeroen Dubbeldam , who crossed the finish line without a jumping fault, but missed the jump-off because he was two hundredths of a second too slow and received a time penalty for this.

Nick Skelton had to start first in the jump-off . With Big Star he went without any mistakes. In addition, his fast time put the following riders under pressure: Both Steve Guerdat and Kent Farrington made a mistake on the first obstacle. Peder Fredricson remained with All In no mistake, however, was slower than Skelton. After Guerdat had already missed his chance for a second individual Olympic victory, Eric Lamaze was the last to start the jump-off. Compared to London 2012, not only was the number of riders per team increased, but the total number of dressage riders was also increased by 10 starting places to 60. This includes at least one team with three or four riders each, all of whom also compete individually. The Brazilian team was automatically qualified to host.

The number of teams could increase if a NOK reached at least three individual quota places (a maximum of four per NOK were permitted). Denmark succeeded so that eleven teams can compete in Rio de Janeiro.

The top three teams qualified at the 2014 World Equestrian Games. The best team from Africa / Middle East / Southeast Asia / Oceania qualified at the 2014 World Equestrian Games, even if they did not make it into the top three teams.

The three best teams from the 2015 European Championships were added. A team also secured qualification at the 2015 Pan-American Games. In addition, two more individual starting places were awarded based on the results of the Grand Prix de Dressage at the 2015 Pan-American Games. Another team from Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Oceania as well as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan were able to qualify in a qualifying competition as part of the Peterhof Dressage Gala in September 2015 (a Grand Prix de Dressage as part of a CDI 2 *) . Two other single starters from Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Oceania were also able to qualify in Perl.

20 more individual starting places were allocated based on the Olympic ranking. This was determined on the basis of the results achieved in international tournaments in the period from March 9, 2015 to March 6, 2016. Of these, six places were allocated to riders from Olympic groups A, B and C (Europe and Central Asia), two from Olympic groups D and E (America) and two from Olympic groups F and G (other nations). The six remaining starting places will also be assigned based on the Olympic ranking, to not yet qualified riders based on their position in the Olympic ranking.

75 riders qualified for the show jumping competitions, including 15 teams with four riders each. All qualified teams can start with four riders in the individual competition. For NOKs without a qualified team, a start with a maximum of two individual starters is possible. The Brazilian team is automatically qualified as host.

At the 2014 World Equestrian Games, the five best-placed teams secured qualifications for the Olympic Games. The three best, not yet qualified teams qualified at the European Championships in 2015. The three best teams and the six best riders whose NOK did not qualify with one team for the Olympic show jumping competitions also qualified at the 2015 Pan-American Games.

In addition, three further qualification tournaments took place: As part of the Nations Cup tournament in Abu Dhabi in February 2015, the top-ranked team from Africa and the Middle East was allowed to start the Olympic Games. Another team  starting place was awarded as part of a CSI 3 * in Šamorín, where a national competition was held for this purpose. To give riders from Southeast Asia and Oceania additional starting opportunities, a CSI 1 * with a nationwide competition was held at Hof Kasselmann in Hagen am Teutoburg Forest in August 2015. The two best placed teams qualified here as well as another participant who received a single starting place for his (not yet qualified with a team) NOK.

In addition, eight further individual starting positions were allocated based on the Olympic ranking, one each to the best participants from the Olympic groups A, B, C and F and four to the best not yet qualified riders based on the Olympic ranking (the individual starting positions go to the respective NOK).

The number of starting places for eventing riders was reduced by ten places to 65 compared to London 2012. This results in particular from the change that only four instead of five riders per team are allowed to compete. The number of teams (subject to additional teams due to individual starting positions) remained unchanged at eleven.

A team from Brazil is automatically entitled to start as the host. The six best-placed teams qualified at the 2014 World Equestrian Games. The French, who initially placed fourth, were disqualified because positive medication was found in the horse Qalao des Mers of their team rider Maxime Livio .

Another two team starting places were awarded at the 2015 European Championships. France won the bronze medal here and thus secured the right to start the Olympic Games as the best not yet qualified team. The best team not yet eligible to compete in the 2015 Pan American Games also qualified. The last regular team starting place (for teams from Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Oceania) was awarded as part of the Boekelo 2015 Nations Cup .

The last 21 quota places were then awarded by means of the FEI Olympic ranking. For this purpose, three qualification modes were used: First, the seven continental zones (North-West Europe, South-West Europe, Eastern Europe / Central Asia, North America, Central / South America, Africa / Middle East and Southeast Asia / Oceania) each received a starting place. Two to three of these zones were then combined into groups, each given two additional starting places. Finally, nine starting places were awarded to the best riders who had not yet qualified and whose nation had not received a team starting place. As planned, this would have been eight starting places, but no single starting place could be allocated for North America, as the United States and Canada were already qualified.

As part of the allocation of the individual starting places, Italy, Russia and Switzerland each received three starting places and thus an additional team starting place. However, Switzerland named only two participants, the Vogg brothers. Mélody Johner and her horse Frimeur du Record CH could not confirm her performance during the selection phase , so that, in consultation with the rider, no nomination was made. Due to injuries or personal reasons, no other suitable starter for Switzerland could be found. Belarus did not nominate a rider for Rio either. Therefore there were two successors, a single starting place for Poland and a fourth rider for Italy.
