At the 2016 Summer Olympics in the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro , two water polo competitions took place from 6 to 20 August 2016 . For the fifth time in a row, eight teams took part in the women's tournament and, as usual, twelve teams took part in the men's tournament.

The venues were the Parque Aquático Maria Lenk and the temporary Olympic Aquatics Stadium .

Men's Olympic Tournament

There were two preliminary round groups with six teams each; each team played once against the other five. The four best placed in both groups played against each other in the quarterfinals. The quarter-final winners advanced to the semifinals, while the quarter-final losers played placement games. After all, the semi-final winners played for the gold medal, the semi-final losers for the bronze medal.

Olympic tournament of women
