Courtney Mathewson (born September 14, 1986 in Orange, California , United States ) is an American water polo player . She won the gold medal with the US national water polo team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . Mathewson plays for the UCLA Bruins , a college team from the University of California, Los Angeles . She occupies the position of the attacker.

Career

Mathewson played water polo for her school while she was at Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills . Since 2008 she was active as a regular player for the UCLA Bruins, which remained undefeated throughout the season. She scored 54 goals in 33 games. In 2009, Mathewson was then nominated for the first time for the US national water polo team.

In 2011 she reached sixth place with the national team at the World Water Polo Championships ; in the same year she was able to win the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, where she threw 14 goals during the competition, four of them in the final (27:26 against Canada ). In 2012 Mathewson won the gold medal with the national team at the Summer Olympics in London. She scored a total of four goals during the competition. In 2013, she reached third place in the World Water Polo League in Beijing.

As a club player, she was active in Australia in 2008/09 (for the Drummoyne Water Polo Club ) and in 2009/10 for a club in Saragossa , Spain .

Private

Mathewson graduated with a degree in sociology . She is married.
