Orange is a city of 136,416 inhabitants (as of 2010) in Orange County, Southern California . The city belongs to the Los Angeles area .
Founded in 1869 by Andrew Glassell and Alfred Chapman, the settlement received city rights in 1888. As in most other cities in Orange County, Orange's population grew slowly into the 1950s . Then, however, the city was hit by a construction boom due to its proximity to the big city of Los Angeles and convenient transport connections there. This continues - somewhat slowed down - even today.
The Block , a large shopping and leisure center, is located on the western edge of the city and also attracts many visitors from surrounding cities.
Orange is the seat of the Diocese of Orange in California .
Chapman University has been in Orange since 1954.
politics
Orange has a city council consisting of four members elected for four years and a mayor with a two-year term. After the last election in November 2012, Teresa "Tita" Smith took over from Carolyn V. Cavecche .
