60 participants from 34 countries.

The men's Olympic golf tournament was played over four rounds of 18 holes on the par 71 course. The participants were determined on the basis of the golf world rankings , but the top four players ( Jason Day , Dustin Johnson , Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy ) canceled, partly officially because of the Zika virus , partly because they considered the tournament to be "unimportant" (according to McIlroy ).

The results of the tournament were included in the official world rankings. The winner received 46 world ranking points, about as much as an average tournament on the PGA Tour and a better tournament on the PGA European Tour .
