Barra da Tijuca is a district in the East Zone (western zone) of Rio de Janeiro , the population of which rose sharply between 1980 and 2010 from 24,126 to 300,823.

geography

The name is derived from alluvial land (Barra) and the Tupi word for brackish water or "lazy" water, which describes the topographical situation of the district quite well. There are several lagoons that are connected by canals or watercourses. Lagoa de Jacarepaguá, Lagoa de Marapendi and Lagoa de Tijuca are the names of the three largest lagoons. The Bosque da Barra is a nature reserve and park in the center of Barra da Tijuca, near the Alvorada terminal , where the original vegetation has been preserved. Barra da Tijuca also has its own beach, Praia da Barra.

history

Barra da Tijuca is a comparatively modern part of the city, as it was only started to be built on or developed practically 30 years ago. Before that, the area was just a long beach with typical underwater sandbanks, the hinterland was dominated by swamps and was thus almost unsuitable for planting and settlement. The master plan for Barra from 1967 came from the pen of the urban planner Lúcio Costa , who was also involved in the construction of Brasilia . There is a mix of wide streets, green spaces, shopping centers, apartment houses and large villas. This combination attracted wealthy people, so that Barra has developed into a posh district in which well-known personalities such as B. Ronaldo and the musician Chico Buarque live.

In addition, Barra da Tijuca, which is often referred to as Barra , is a booming area that houses the largest shopping centers in all of Latin America . The Cidade das Artes (City of Arts) is a cultural complex that is also located in Barra da Tijuca. The building, which opened on January 3, 2013, stands on concrete pillars ten meters above the ground. It houses one of the most important art centers in Rio de Janeiro.

Olympic Games 2016

The Rio de Janeiro Olympic Park , which was the centerpiece of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, is located in the district. The Olympic village , the media center and the Riocentro, another competition venue, are in the immediate vicinity of the park . In addition, the 18-hole golf course Campo Olímpico de Golfe is located in the district, which has been available to the population since the games. The start for walking and time trial was at the beginning of the coastal road Avenida Lúcio Costa in the neighboring district of Recreio dos Bandeirantes on Pedra do Pontal .
