Santa Teresa ( also Santa Tereza in Portuguese ) is a central ( Zona Central ) district of Rio de Janeiro located on a hill . It is known for its narrow, winding streets and is particularly popular with artists and tourists.

history

The neighborhood developed around the Santa Teresa Convent , which was built on Desterro Hill in the 1750s . Many mansions from the turn of the 20th century, many of which are still preserved today, show that the neighborhood was a preferred residential area for the upper class at the time. Santa Teresa has always been a district that particularly attracted European emigrants, including many Germans. Until 1960, when Rio was still the capital of Brazil , the foreign embassies were also located here .

Santa Teresa was no longer considered an upscale residential area for a while when it saw a resurgence as a bohemian district. Their studios and galleries, small museums, numerous bars and restaurants as well as the preserved architecture attract many tourists today.

The rise in crime does not stop at the Santa Teresa district. Looting of bars and robberies on tourists as well as shootings are the order of the day in the formerly posh neighborhood.

tram

Santa Teresa is also known for its tram, the so-called "Bonde". It has been in continuous operation since 1877. This makes it one of the oldest tram lines in the world and the oldest electrified means of rail transport in South America.
