Guaratiba is a district of Rio de Janeiro in the west of the city . The districts of Pedra de Guaratiba , Sepetiba and Barra de Guaratiba also belong to the administrative region of the same name .

Guaratiba is located on the Atlantic Ocean west of Grumari and, with its beaches, is considered a recreational area in the city of Rio de Janeiro . The name of the place comes from the indigenous Tupi language and means that Guará birds live here. The district has a number of tourist attractions and the surrounding vegetation is tropical. So you come across banana plantations and in the area of Baía de Sepetiba you can find mangrove swamps .

Barra de Guaratiba

This district is located south on the edge of the Serra da Grota Funda . Due to its location on the edge of the Baía de Sepetiba you will mainly find mangrove swamps here. Various waterways connect the open sea with the bay and there is a transition to the elongated Restinga de Marambaia peninsula , to which access is blocked, however, as the Brazilian army with the Centro de Avaliação do Exército (CAEX) is located here. The name Marambaia comes from the indigenous Tupi language and means fencing in for war.

In the 1960s and 1970s, wealthy families from Rio had settled on the Barra de Guaratiba, but these estates have since been sold because of the increased population. Various country house buildings date from this time.

Pedra de Guaratiba

Today this place is most visited and in demand as a place of residence or weekend refuge for the Cariocas from Rio. The population here has increased enormously in recent years. Fishing still has a certain meaning here. The tourist expansion of Praia da Brisa beach has led to a large increase in weekend visitors. Various fish restaurants have become very famous here and attract people from the big city.

Ilha de Guaratiba

This location is still a bit rural and has its distinguishing mark in a large rock, the Pedra Branca. There are also many nurseries here that offer ornamental flowers for visitors from the big city to buy. A tourist attraction is the Pedra Branca State Park. Here you can walk on hiking trails through the tropical nature.

Due to a great deal of speculation with the soil in this region, which can be traced back to the plans to build a tunnel in the direction of Rio de Janeiro (under the Serra da Grota Funda ), new building land is being developed here.
