The Complexo do Alemão (German: "Area of German", nickname Gaza do Rio ) is a large favela in Rio de Janeiro , which consists of 25 settlements. The name is derived from the original owner of a fazenda within today's favela, the Pole Leonard Kaczmarkiewicz, who was mistaken for a German.
Complexo do Alemão is located in the immediate vicinity of the Vila Cruzeiro favela .
The favela was stormed by police and military in November 2010 and is to be permanently occupied by units of the Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora in order to break the rule of Comando Vermelho .
On July 7, 2011, a cable car , the Teleférico do Alemão, went into operation. 152 gondolas operated between the six stations of Bonsucesso, Morro do Adeus, Morro da Baiana, Morro do Alemão, Itararé and Palmeiras. In 2016 the operation was stopped again because the state could not raise the money for the operation to the operator consortium since April 2016.
