Rocinha is a district of Rio de Janeiro in the southern part (Zona Sul) of the city between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea . The quarter developed from a favela , but now mostly includes residential buildings with legalized ownership. The social structure of the residents as well as the still predominantly simple brick construction of the houses means that the term favela is used even after the recognition as the official district of Rio de Janeiro. Rocinha extends over a steep mountain slope and overlooks the town about a kilometer from the beach. It is estimated that between 62,000 (last official survey) and 250,000 people (residents' estimate) live there.

Rocinha is repeatedly referred to as the largest favela in Brazil or even Latin America . This can be countered by the fact that in Rio alone there are several urban areas in which various favelas have grown so much that they now form huge closed “complexes” of favelas that can only be recognized from the outside as a single favela. For example, the Complexos do Alemão and da Maré in the northern part of Rio, with equally dense buildings, each take up twice to three times the area of the Rocinha. Such “complexos” should not be limited to Rio either, they will be found in all the megacities of Latin America. Ultimately, the fame of the Rocinha can only be attributed to its location in the middle of the affluent southern zone of Rio, world-famous for its beaches Copacabana and Ipanema.

history

Rocinha was stormed by police on November 13, 2011. The reason was preparations for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . The favela is to be permanently occupied by the police unit Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora (UPP) in the future. There was no resistance whatsoever.

The entrances to Rocinha were sealed off days before the storm. It was Antônio Francisco Bonfim Lopes , according to prosecutors the "boss of bosses" arrested.
